A fatal case of diphtheria in Belgium

On 17 March 2016, Belgian authorities reported a fatal case of toxigenic respiratory diphtheria through the Early Warning and Response System. This rapid risk assessment describes the epidemiological situation of diphtheria surrounding this case of toxigenic respiratory diphtheria and lists public health options aimed at resolving the acute shortage of diphtheria antitoxin, improving the knowledge required to promptly recognise and treat diphtheria, and tackling the issue of non-vaccination against diphtheria in the EU/EEA.

Outbreak of yellow fever in Angola

This document assesses the risk of yellow fever infections in Europe related to the ongoing outbreak of yellow fever in Angola, and the notification of imported cases in China and possibly Mauritania. The current epidemic of yellow fever in Angola highlights the risk of infection for unvaccinated travellers, and the risk of further international spread through introduction of the virus into areas with a competent vector and susceptible populations.

Lassa fever in Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Germany and USA

This document assesses the risk of Lassa fever infection in Europe as a result of the ongoing outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria, Benin and Togo. Two imported cases from Togo have recently been medically evacuated to Germany and the United States respectively. The document provides background information on Lassa fever virus, advice on the likelihood of secondary infection and prevention of transmission and travel advice for people going to or returning from West Africa.

Zika virus disease epidemic: potential association with microcephaly and Guillain-Barr- syndrome – Update

This update assesses the risks associated with the Zika virus epidemic currently affecting countries in the Americas. It assesses the association between Zika virus infection and congenital central nervous system malformations, including microcephaly, as well as the association between Zika virus infection and Guillain-Barr- syndrome.

Guidance on tuberculosis control in vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations

This guidance provides support to those working towards strengthening tuberculosis prevention and control among vulnerable populations. It provides an overview of interventions to improve early diagnosis of tuberculosis and treatment completion in these populations, as well as factors to consider when developing programmes for health communication, awareness and education, and programme monitoring and evaluation.

Antenatal screening for HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis and rubella susceptibility
in the EU/EEA

The results of this survey among national public health experts indicate that limited access to antenatal care services, combined with low testing uptake among pregnant women in certain subpopulations, often leads to low screening coverage for HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis and rubella susceptibility, especially in vulnerable groups.

Handbook on TB laboratory diagnostic methods for the European Union

The aim of this handbook is to provide network members and other laboratories involved in the diagnosis of tuberculosis, with an agreed list of key diagnostic methods and their protocols in various areas of TB diagnosis, ranging from microbiological diagnosis of active TB to the diagnosis of latent TB infection. This handbook offers a single source of reference by compiling all methods, with a strong focus on standard (reference) and evidence-based methods.

Molecular typing for surveillance of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in the EU/EEA

This report describes the geographical and temporal distribution of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis based on molecular typing data (24-locus MIRU-VNTR genotyping) as reported by EU/EEA countries. Data were available up to 2014.

Measles and rubella monitoring, January 2016
Date of publication: 3 March 2016

Reporting on surveillance data from 1 January 2015 – 31 December 2015 and epidemic intelligence data until 31 January 2016. Starting with this issue, ECDC will publish the measles and rubella monitoring report twice a year. The first issue of each year will report on the previous calendar year, while the summer issue will focus on the most recent measles and rubella season and present the data collected during the past 12 months.

The ECDC communicable disease threats report is a weekly bulletin intended for epidemiologists and health professionals in the area of communicable disease prevention and control.
